In Memoriam of Gerald Keith Bolkema (1954-2008)
May 2008

Gerald Keith Bolkema

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our dear friend and colleague Gerald K. Bolkema, 53, on May 25, 2008. His kindness and guidance toward so many of us made an unforgettable impact.

An Admired Leader and Exemplary Attorney.
Gerry’s career at Baker & McKenzie was an outstanding one. He joined the Firm in June 1989 after receiving his J.D. from the University of Chicago. He graduated from Calvin College with a Bachelor of Arts in 1976. He managed a successful practice, providing excellent service and thoughtful legal advice to his clients on complex and sophisticated Infrastructure, Energy and Oil & Gas development matters and project financings. Prior to his legal studies, Gerry worked for ComEd as a Systems Analyst for eight years and that experience greatly enhanced his abilities and services as a lawyer.

Gerry traveled the world serving his clients and the Firm. During his travels he had the opportunity to interact with many different people from a host of diverse countries and cultures. They all had one thing in common: a fondness and great respect for Gerry. Over the years, many relied on Gerry as a source of knowledge, advice and a voice of reason. He always thought of others first.

Gerry was an active and insightful Firm leader. He served as the Chair of the North America Banking, Finance & Major Projects Practice Group and was a member of the Global Banking & Finance Steering Committee from 2005 to 2008. He also served on the steering committee of the Global Energy, Chemicals, Mining and Infrastructure practice group from 2002 to 2004.

Passion for His Family and Community.
Despite his rigorous travel schedule and commitment to the Firm, Gerry knew that there was no place like home. He centered his personal life around his loving wife, Jane, and his children, Braden (and wife Shana), Derek, Deanne (and husband Mike) and Graham. Shortly before his death, he shared with us his excitement about becoming a grandfather to his new grandson Nathaniel.

Gerry was an avid cyclist and participated in many charity rides. Gerry and his wife have also been active supporters of Habitat for Humanity, which Baker & McKenzie has strongly supported for many years. Going forward, the Chicago Office’s donations to this charity will be made in Gerry's memory. If you wish, you may make a donation online through the organization's Gift From the Heart Program.

Our Fond Memories and Sincere Condolences.
Words cannot describe the loss to all of us from Gerry's passing. His strength of character, wit, wisdom and patience were endless. His mentorship was invaluable. He was inexhaustible in his pursuit for perfection in his work. He was trustworthy and he trusted others. Every person who knew him praised his abilities and judgment. He was a great teacher and a great lawyer, but most of all, he was a great friend. He will be missed.

Our deepest condolences go out to Gerry’s loving family and friends around the world.
