Fall 2008 International Financial Services Business Briefings: How the IRS Obtains non-US Records and Documents in Tax Investigations – Update |
| Description |
The US government through its tax collection body, the IRS, has increasingly taken steps to obtain non-US based records and documents in investigations into various international transactions which the IRS views as aimed at avoiding or evading US taxes. This session will focus on providing an update of the various legal mechanisms used to exchange tax and related information including the Tax and the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaties entered into between the US and Switzerland as well as other information gathering tools (such as summons or subpoenas to US financial institutions) used by the IRS in search of such information. |
