International Clerkships
Are you interested in pursuing a career in an international legal practice? Perhaps we can help.
Each year, Baker & McKenzie awards 20 International Clerkships to law students and recent graduates interested in exploring an international legal career with the Firm. Recipients typically work with Baker & McKenzie lawyers in two different countries over a 12-week period.
Clerks are selected on the basis of their legal ability, interest in pursuing an international practice, and facility in English as well as the working languages of the locations where they will work (if other than English).
Each Clerkship includes an attractive salary and travel expenses.
Candidates generally must have completed at least two years of formal legal training prior to their Clerkship. Candidates in the US may qualify if they will have completed two years in an ABA-approved law school JD curriculum by the time their Clerkship would be completed.
Applications are accepted, and awards are organized, locally. The program is flexible. Consult a "sponsoring office" in your jurisdiction for details on how the program is conducted locally or write to the Firm's Talent Management Team, via e-mail, by clicking on this link (depending on your browser configuration this link may not work, in which case please address your e-mail to debbie.miller@bakernet.com).
How to Apply
An International Clerkship is only available if you wish to apply for a permanent work contract. To be considered for the scheme, please write a letter of application for a permanent position to Baker & McKenzie in the jurisdiction in which you intend to practice after admission.
With your letter of application, enclose:
- a full curriculum vitae (including the results of all university examinations to date)
- two letters of reference from law professors, tutors, or other appropriate persons who are in a position to evaluate the quality of your legal work; and
- a detailed statement of the educational value to you of an International Clerkship with Baker & McKenzie.
Applications from candidates in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Colombia are normally required by October; from candidates in the US by November; and from all other candidates by January each year. Exact application dates and other details can be obtained from the location through which you make your application.
As a condition of acceptance, when clerkships are awarded, candidates are asked in a letter from the Chairman of the Firm to provide a report of their experiences so that future potential applicants can read about them on the website.
